Enjoy this classic cheapie!

Hey guys! Whats the deal here? This film is one of my all time faves! The first time I saw it I loved it straight away. I love the Englishness of it all....the country pub....the warm beer!!!....feel that cheesy dialogue: "You were no untouched virgin when we met" etc.

Enjoy gawping at the stunning beauty of Jane Merrow in a wet bikini and more! This film is very similar to Fishers Island Of Terror,very much a companion piece. I never get tired of seeing this flick,I view my ancient tape every year. Dont expect a masterpiece and you will not be disappointed . Its corny,cheap but not tatty,with great photography,solid performances and lovely colour....ENJOY!!!

Review :

Not terribly audience-friendly, but smart and very, very cool.

This isn't your average James Bond knockoff spy thriller; the fact that the screenplay is by playwright Harold Pinter is the first clue. It's a bit strange to see such exquisitely Pinter-esque dialogue (the laconic, seemingly innocuous sentences; the profound silences; the syntax that isn't quite how real people actually talk) in a spy movie, but it really works.

Quiller isn't your average spy. He's played by George Segal with a cool superficiality that works very nicely; he doesn't go charging in with guns blazing -- he doesn't even carry a gun -- and the one time he does try to fight his way out of a sticky spot, he gets pounded. The other standouts in the cast are Alec Guinness as Quiller's controller, and Max von Sydow as the leader of the neo-Nazi cell that Quiller is attempting to crack.

At first glance, the movie is deeply frustrating, and the script appears full of holes, but in fact, it's so smart that it assumes the audience is bright enough to pick up on the breadcrumb trail of clues that it's actually leaving. All in all, I recommend it, but with reservations. If you like tidy conclusions and have limited patience with extreme subtlety, this may not be to your taste.

Living vicariously

Alain Jessua is certainly the most underrated and the most overlooked of the post N.V. French directors .Brash,courageous,intelligent,adventurous and exciting,he was all this and more in his heyday (roughly from his debut to "Paradis Pour Tous" ):6 movies in total ,which is not much but all are original and different from all that was made in the sixties/seventies in France.

When I was a little boy,I wanted to be Tintin,and to live his life of adventures.

Bob,in "Jeu De Massacre " ,might have registered the same desire ,but his dreams have never faded away and now nearing thirty , when he meets two cartoonists (the man writes the scripts,the wife draws),he tells them he's been thru all the stories they have invented:as soon as he appears on the screen ,we feel how irrational Bob is .Michel Duchaussoy -who would be in two other Jessua movies:" Traitement De Choc" and "Armaguedon" as well as in some of Chabrol's best : "Que La Bête Meure" -his best part,IMO- and "La Rupture" - gives a tormented feverish performance;when he tells his imaginary adventures ,he uses the "Passé Simple" ,a tense you would not use in a conversation: it creates a gap between the narrator and what he is telling .

Bob has an over possessive wealthy mother with whom he lives in Switzerland in a desirable mansion by the Leman Lake .He invites the two artists who have understood that they can make money out of this mythomania .Next step will be writing a brand new comic strip which introduces a new hero ,some kind of "Super Bob" .It won't be long before the rich kid wants to become this superman .Little by little,the writer's wife,who draws the strip (the drawings are terribly dated ,Barbarella style ,but it inspires Bob's vital extremism)begins to feel like becoming herself the heroine of the story and she creates Helen ,Bob's partner in crime.But soon,being on the paper won't be enough...

Very ambitious,not always successful,easy to admire ,but not very palatable,"Jeu De massacre" introduces a disturbed hero whose inflated ego knows no bounds ;Jessua would treat the subject again with "Armaguedon" in which a man ,holding some second-rate position ,tries to draw the crowds' attention with bomb scares .

Who has never dreamed he became the hero of a movie,of a comic strip or a novel? If you hang on to this dream,you'll never grow up;and you know how it is painful growing up.

Live to win

1943: Two American soldiers (Franco and Ciccio) are captured on a mission to find the German general von Kassler (Buster Keaton!) who lets them escape with secret documents - fakes that are intended to fall into the enemies' hands and cause confusion. But by mistake, the two captives get away with the real plans and then get in the middle of the attack, trying to survive in various disguises. Franco has a great scene when he holds a nonsensical speech to the soldiers ("we can only win the war if we don't lose it"). But this comedy by the busy and popular Sicilian duo Franco and Ciccio stands out from the rest by its guest star. Subtle touches like Keaton playing chess or piano make a difference. The stoicism of the silent Keaton provides a great contrast for the aggression and loudness of Franco Ressel as the colonel. A recommendable little comedy.

Silly little slapstick comedy

This is a silly little slapstick comedy, very typical for the kind which were quite popular in Germany from the mid 1950s to the early 1970s. Although they are now less fondly remembered, these films were quite similar in style and tone to the British Carry-On films, and I might add: also in quality.

This one here is below par, partly because most of the top-notch comedians in the cast (Willy Millowitsch, Ralf Wolter, Heinz Erhardt, Edith Hancke) only appear briefly in roles that are only remotely connected to the plot - "pay the rent" stuff, albeit well executed. Still, the main cast does a good job, with the exception of Terry Torday whose approach of playing an auditor I might politely describe as bizarre. What makes films like this nowadays less fashionable than their Carry-On cousins are the (compulsory) serious romantic subplots which now appear terribly dated.

There are signs that the film went into production before the script was finished, e.g. the name of the character played by Terry Torday, although central, isn't revealed to us until very very late in the movie. Up to then she's referred as "a lady", or "that terrible person". Christiane Ruecker's character didn't fare much better.

Maybe it is so bad... that it is good!

I read at the film's premiere that it had been "fun" to produce, with 18 wounded during the hectic fights and horseback stunts. It was definitely fun to watch, with 82 bad guys dead by my count, at the second viewing. And no, I did not go back for the accounting of the "death" toll, but for the imaginative, riotous fights, involving both the male and female members of the McGregor clan. I regret no video-age producer cares to bring back a copy of these precious B-movie jewels of the Italian "spaghetti western" era. Much better, and healthy, than current US violent tv fare.

A lot better than I remembered when I fell asleep as a teenager watching it

Yes, that is right, I was trying to stay up late to watch this on the old Sammy Terry Terror Theater on Indianapolis/Bloomington channel 4, and fell asleep after about 15 mins. Therefore my recollection of it was as a boring movie, when in reality I was just tired. So I found a tape of it for $2 at the local swap meet and thought I'd give it a try since I liked all sorts of European giallo-styled films. What a great treat! Plenty of nice scary moments interspersed with humor and action. Not boring at all. Good performances all around, Kinski is superb. Now I know where Wes Craven got the knife-hand idea for Freddy K. One of the best things about these European horror films is that they actually have lengthy moments of suspense and dialog that aren't obscured by stupid, loud, obnoxious rock and pop music influenced noise like modern US horror films. They actually have soundtracks that enhance the mood rather than try to shock you with loud sudden blasts.

Stunning adaptation

Luchino Visconti's sublime adaptation of Camus' "unfilmable" existentialist classic is all but forgotten. It's one of Visconti's best films, a searing, intelligent film. Marcello Mastroianni reportedly stepped into the role of Meurseult, which Visconti had earmarked for his protégé Alain Delon, who would have been too pretty to play the character. Mastroianni gives a masterful performance. As his mistress Maria Cardona, Anna Karina is stunning. She is especially moving in the courtroom scene. Giuseppe Rotunno's cinematography is peerless. Pauline Kael voted this as one of the top three films of 1967, after "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Chimes at Midnight". I hear that the reason why the movie isn't available on DVD or video is because of the rights. Hope this is rectified soon.

Bernard Chanticleer's father gives him two simple words of advice: "Grow up." She turns out to be a man hater, emotionally scarred by the lecherous wooden-legged hypnotherapist who "counseled" her in high school. All in all, Bernard finds himself in an improbable universe with a calculated clumsiness designed to evoke his confusing coming-of-age.

Goes Nowhere but Has a Good Time Going There

About 15 minutes into this quirky film I was ready to proclaim it a must see and to bill it as the best movie no one has seen or even heard about. After all it was Coppola's masters thesis for film school. It has Elizabeth Hartman successfully playing against type as a sexy (somewhat psycho) Greenwich Village ingénue. It has Peter Kastner, Rip Torn, Geraldine Page and Julie Harris playing characters more bizarre than anything in "Harold and Maude" (it reminds you a lot of that film and may have inspired it). It has Karen Black doing a toned down version of the Rayette Dipesto character she would play in "Five Easy Pieces". It has a lively sound track by the Lovin' Spoonful. It even has Coppola cutting in extensive gruesome footage from his first film "Dementia 13".

Unfortunately by the halfway point of "You're a Big Boy Now" it totally runs out of steam and you begin to understand that its obscurity is well-deserved. Coppola's script is the problem because the cast are generally excellent and you can tell they had a lot of fun making the film. Even minor cast members like Dolph Sweet do a good job and there are great little sequences like Kastner's after dark explorations of the New York City streets. But unlike "Herald and Maude", Coppola says nothing with this film; consequently it ends up as a classic case of the whole being considerably less than the sum of its parts.

I am not in love with Coppola as a director, but even those who are will acknowledge the incredible distance between his good stuff and the vast majority of his films. This is not his good stuff but is worth checking out if you like Hartman, Harris, and Page.

Exotic and funny

Apart from the dreadful south American dubbing of my DVD I must admit that PECOS CLEANS UP (AKA Pecos and the treasure of Moctezuma) is a good way to spend 90 minutes, if you are into Spaghetti westerns this one is a exotic rarity that you don't want to miss.

Imagine the only descendant of Moctezuma who rules a gang of ruthless bandits and lives inside an Aztec pyramid craved on a lost canyon, that's the villain...now imagine that the lost gold of Moctezuma is somewhere in a cave and our hero (and three mariachis) are the only ones who knows where to find the treasure, there's also a map and a bunch of soldiers...strange story for a western? sure, but it works fine and is also a movie for the entire family, not much violence, total absence of sex, some funny jokes and bloodless shootouts make the movie suitable for kids and probably they will enjoy it a lot.

Good for a matinée.

Pourtant ....Que La Montagne Est Belle!

Generally I do not go much for Denys De La Patellière ,which represents one of the worst aspect of the old school;but there are exceptions :the first was "Retour De Manivelle" a suspenseful film noir .

"Le Voyage Du Père " is a return to the thirties melodrama ,the likes of "La Petite Lise" ,"Jenny ""Angèle" .Like them,it features a faux happy end .Fernandel walks a fine line between comedy (the scenes when he arrives in Lyon are echoes of the naive character he often played in the past ) and tragedy (never he seemed so vulnerable,so desperate and so old that in this final sequence where he looks like the old horse he would have to lead to the slaughterhouse four years later in "Heureux Qui Comme Ulysse".

The directing is, by and large,undistinguished,although the first and last pictures ,which show the magnificent mountain landscapes enhanced by the lovely Gavarentz music,are really good taste ;the acting is faultless :how can you be wrong when you get Laurent Terzieff,the most gifted actor of his generation,as the wistful schoolteacher ,in love with the daughter,in a restrained performance,Madeleine Robinson as madam who lights the candle and "who takes care of her girls",Michel Auclair in the underwritten part of a sentimental client and Lili Palmer ,as the hero's wife,who dreams of a better life for her daughters and is still dreaming when the movie's over.

The movie was slagged off by the critic ,then totally under the young Turks of the Nouvelle Vague' s thumb and it's unfair cause this movie and "Heureux Qui Comme Ulysse" are certainly Fernandel's swan songs

The Not-Quite-Magnificent Seven

When his entire workforce (and his little dog!) is massacred by land- grabbing badman Fernando Sancho, fancy-pants lawyer/mine-owner Sean Flynn is schooled in the tough-guy arts by his surviving foreman and the foreman's rowdy former Army buddies.

Despite a terminally low budget and some extreme silliness, there's some mild fun to be had here, including a furniture-busting bar-room brawl, no doubt inspired by the one in Dodge City, which starred Flynn's famous dad. Sancho is always entertaining, even though he always plays the same character in just about everything he's in.

It would appear that the entire music budget was spent on a snappy (though pretty bad!) theme song, with the rest of the score being some pretty obvious library music, which lends to the crackpot nature of the film.

After watching Flynn here, it's easy to see why his career didn't take off. Unfortunately, his career as an adventurer was equally as short- lived.

Sarno on Tobacco Road

Unheralded 60s auteur Joseph Sarno moves his internecine psychological wars to backwoods America to great effect in this opus. As usual, the writer-director's strategy is to reveal the characters and their relationships through brief dialogue scenes and sexual liaisons, gradually interweaving the plot threads, upping the intensity and revealing the sordid intentions lurking beneath the surface. A few of the method actors are rather unconvincing in their accents and mannerisms, and the scenes tend to be static due to the extreme low budget. But the Dreyer-like chiaroscuro lighting, the insinuating bongo-driven jazz score, and the intense portrayals make this one of his most compelling dramas, fitting well within the experimental art cinema of the 60s despite the exploitation pedigree. The eroticism is more intense than in his better-known earlier films, and the betrayals crueler than ever. A must-see piece of the Sarno puzzle.

The name is Dagger . . . Dick Dagger. (Naw, just doesn't work).

James Bond is a character often imitated, never duplicated -- especially by this unskilled production which offers spy fans Paul Mantee ("Robinson Crusoe on Mars") as agent Dick Dagger (!) and his female ally, Terry Moore ("Might Joe Young").

Mantee is armed with a laser-firing watch, but he doesn't use it often. The villain is played by Jan Murray, whose role wins him the dubious distinction of being the least believable Nazi war criminal in movie history.

But the story does succeed in creating a disgusting villain; Murray's meat-packing business is processing meat from human bodies, and he serves a fillet mignon to Mantee obtained from sexy Maureen Arthur! (Yuck). Murray's sexy accomplice is Sue Ann Langdon ("A Guide for the Married Man"). Directed by Richard Rush. Co-star Terry Moore, a former wife of Howard Hughes, later posed for a photo spread in Playboy magazine, looking remarkably good for a woman over fifty.

Oh I really liked this movie!!

What a brilliant caper movie! Before I go on, though, I need to point out that this movie is a reworking of the movie Rififi (1954)--a French caper movie. While Rififi generally gets higher marks among critics, I also liked this one.

The movie is unusual in that it has such a multinational cast and quite a bit of the movie is dubbed because of this. This didn't matter to say the least. However, it was interesting to see Adolfo Celi in the movie. He was the lead villain in Bond's THUNDERBALL and in this movie his voice is dubbed with a totally different voice and so he sounds a lot different.

Now on to what I loved--the complicated and exciting plot. It just keeps you guessing again and again--even up until the last scene. Also, the acting was great and the characters were well-written--everyone seemed to be at the top of their form.

So, if you want a movie about a gang of thieves pulling the ultimate heist and want to see one that's among the best, give this film a try--if you can find it, as it's not exactly a well-known flick. Perhaps with so many films like it ("Topkapi", "The Killing""Bob le Flambeur" and many others) it just got lost in the process.,

Well acted softcore Swede smut, with some interesting characterizations, legitimately erotic scenes and some surprising glimpses in mid-60s clubland.

The Overseas Elvis

We've seen Elvis as the racecar driver, millionare texan, boxer (kid galahad), convict, hillbilly (kissin' cousins), dumb hilbilly again (follow that dream) Now we see the Tourist Elvis singing his way through England (although it's really Belgium, I'm told.)

Elvis is actually at his best when he is glib and cynical. In those instances his acting is really quite good in a comical way. Sort of like the wisecracking Jim Rockford of Rockford Files. When he tries to get serious, in most of his films, he appears wooden and scripted. This is not a bad Elvis movie, mostly due to the funny antics of the bumbling detectives following him, and Elvis' more relaxed acting style.

The fact that he breaks out in a song at the drop of the hat in some of the corniest situations doesn't matter. After all, it is an ELVIS movie.

One thing that baffles me is the title. Why DOUBLE trouble? Did I miss something? OK I think i get it.. 2 different women causing him trouble?...
