desperate tension like Dostojevskij

This film describes like no other movie a feeling of desperation, hunger and life's meaninglessness. You get in a horrible mood watching it, but you can't take your eyes off the screen. It reminded me a lot of "Raskolnikov" ("Crime and Punishment") by Dostojevskij and a bit of Tom Kristensen's "Hærværk" ("Vandalism"). I did not think movies could be like this - irrational, desperate and oppressive. Per Oscarsson's role as the writer Pondus is moving and exceptionally good. He seems to be a good person, but his moral is tested to the limits, when he by mistake gets too much money back in a grocery. He describes with precise accuracy the dilemma between moral and one's own needs - hunger and love. Watch it, sense it!

But for now they exist in a malaise of dissatisfaction. Soldiers from the local military post provide them some companionship and society, but nothing can suffice to replace Moscow in their hopes. Andrei marries a provincial girl, Natasha, and begins to settle into a life of much less meaning than he had hoped. Natasha begins to run the family her way. Masha, though married, yearns for the sophisticated life and begins a dalliance with Vershinin, an army officer with a sick and suicidal wife. Even Irina, the freshest, most optimistic of the sisters, begins to waver in her dreams until, finally, tragedy strikes.

Review :

The actors are what makes it worthwhile.

This is a rarely seen videotaped presentation of the famed Actors' studio Broadway production of Anton Chekhov's classic play, THE THREE SISTERS. Sandy Dennis, Kim Stanley, and Geraldine Page are splendid in the title roles, three equally unhappy Russian sisters who all believe that their troubles will end if they ever return to their beloved Moscow. Shelley Winters is also terrific as their brother's nagging wife who does very little to brighten their dreary lives. Also in the marvellous cast is Kevin McCarthy and, in an early appearance, Robert Loggia. All-in-all, it's a faithful adaptation of the play, but powerhouse performances by the once-in-a-lifetime cast is what makes it so good. I actually prefer this one over the later 1970 version filmed by and starring Sir Laurence Olivier.

SAVAGE GRINGO (Antonio Roman and, uncredited, Mario Bava, 1966) **1/2

I managed to acquire this rare Spaghetti Western just in time for my ongoing Bava retrospective: in fact, I opted to start with it since this was one of only three titles I had never watched before. I wish I had the time to read through Tim Lucas' chapter on the film in his long-in-coming (and, thus, appropriately massive) Bava biography – especially given his uncredited contribution here when, reportedly, he actually replaced Roman quite early into shooting! Anyway, this is one of four Spaghetti Westerns made by this cult figure and, having now checked out all of them, I can safely say it is the most satisfying (if still far from a key work for either director or genre); obviously, while Bava tried his hand at most any type of film within the "Euro-Cult" stable, he was clearly at his most comfortable (or, if you like, inspired) when handling fantasy/horror/thriller elements! Apart from the trademark inventive camera-work, one thing which alerts one to Bava's involvement is the presence of both hero and villain: one is the star of his previous Spaghetti Western entry, THE ROAD TO FORT ALAMO (1964; which was pretty decent in itself), i.e. brawny Ken Clark (hence, the U.S. moniker for this is more than a bit misleading!) and the other, Piero Lulli, would play a major role in one of the director's best films – KILL, BABY…KILL! (1966). Though usually one of the main assets, the score for this one is no great shakes – nor is there a particular emphasis on violence (nevertheless, the action set-pieces are above-par for the course); what we do get is a reasonably engaging (if thoroughly unsurprising, even in making the heroine out to be something of a conniver) plot which keeps moving, thus allowing one little time to ponder on its potential shortcomings!

Step in the restaurant where humor is served hot and cold!

As a Funés fan, it's hard for me to pick the best ones, but this would definitely stand in my top ten! ...or say top fifteen. This time he is the chef of very exclusive Paris restaurant.

Choleric as ever, he wants everything to be in the right order or even better. Problems occur when president of one unnamed country gets kidnaped while having a dinner at Septim's. With police and gangsters behind his back he tries to find the missing head of state by himself. And obviously a lot of fun happens during this adventure.

Funés is gorgeous as always, very energetic with funny gesticulation. The plot is simple, but cleverly written with many surprising turnovers. And add in the fabulous scene where DS Citroen falls into Sienna river, continuing its ride as a boat and you get the great entertaining movie of comedy empire of those times! Step in, tastes fresh and makes you laugh after all these years:-)

Replaying the same roles with few new ideas

Nice opening sequence: Winnetou rides onto the screen with dramatic music and soon rescues a young boy who is attacked by an eagle. Regrettably, the initial energy is not kept up at the same level. The movie tells the story of Apanatschi (young Uschi Glas) and her little brother Happy who need protection by Winnetou (Pierre Brice) and Old Shatterhand (Lex Barker) because they know where a gold mine is. Bandits with their leader Curly Bill want to know, too - and they stop at nothing and even killed Apanatschi's father.

After the classic „Silver Lake", the larger-than-life Winnetou trilogy and the three easy-going movies starring Stewart Granger, „Half-Breed" feels a bit tired to me. Lex Barker and Pierre Brice replay their famous roles, but there are hardly new ideas. More violent action, less feeling, could be the summary of my impressions.

A grim Cornish legend comes to life in the 1960s

Set in Cornwall but actually produced in Canada, THE VULTURE is a somewhat offbeat sci-fi thriller filmed in the mid-1960s. The cat is a surprising mix of genre regulars and newcomers to the field, but the film has an odd feel to it. It's got more of a feeling of depth and many of the lower-budget sci-fi films hammered out by second string producers during the big '50s Sci-Fi Boom, but it falls short of the better know genre efforts.

American atomic researcher Eric Lutens (Robert Hutton) arrives in Cornwall for a rest. He plans to visit several members of his wife Trudy's (Diane Clair) family and just get away from it all. However, strange things have been happening in the area. A school teacher taking a shortcut through a graveyard during a night-time storm has had a shock that has turned her hair white. Livestock has also been vanishing without a trace.

The discovery of a gold coin, and of an opened grave, brings to light a peculiar local legend. Centuries before, one Francis Real had been suspected of witchcraft. He had been seized and buried alive with his pet -- a strange vulture-like bird -- and a casket of gold coins. Legend had it that he had sworn to destroy the descendents of the local squire who had overseen the burial. This disturbs Eric, as the cursed man had been an ancestor of Trudy's.

A gamekeeper hears "a very large bird" over the estate owned by Trudy's older surviving relative, Brian Stroud (Broderick Crawford) and, investigating, a large black feature is found on the grounds. Eric send it to a noted expert on local birds, hoping he can identify what kind of bird to which it might have belonged.

We now meet the other central characters. Prof. Koniglich (Akim Tamiroff in a wonderful little performance) is a local antiquarian with whom Brian has had a number of dealings over the years. We also meet Brian's brother Edward (Gordon Sterne), who lives in a nearby town.

Koniglich takes the tale seriously when Eric visits him. The professor gets about with difficulty, using canes -- the result of an accident. He also makes a telltale comment about always having been fascinated by science, though he never really developed the interest.

Eric, taking advantage of his scientific background (evidently they do a lot of strange atomic mutation research at the plant where he works), decides someone has conducted a scientific experiment, creating this creature. He reasons this would involve a lot of electricity, and contacts the local utilities to find out who's used a lot of power lately.

Evidence mounts that there may indeed be some terrible creature lurking nearby. A missing sheep is found torn to bits, in a cliffside cave. Shortly thereafter, both Stroud brothers are carried off and killed by something.

Eric, in London, is contacted by the power company. The only odd thing they can find in their probe is that the Professor has stopped using electricity from their lines entirely. He'd installed his own generators some time prior. Eric realizes that Trudy is the final victim. He races back to the Cornish town, even as she's snatched from an isolated road near the Professor's home, by something with claws that swoops down from above.

Eric arrives as the Professor's home, where he finds a nuclear-powered laboratory in the basement. A skeleton sits at a control panel, and a small broken casket of gold coins lies on a nearby counter. It seems the Professor, speculating on whether or not he might have been related to the entombed man, and looking for the gold, had used his equipment to momentarily exchange himself for the contents of the buried coffin.

Not such a good idea. The swap hadn't reversed itself, and his atoms had mixed with the remains of the bird. The composite creature had then broken out of the grave.

Going to the cave in the cliffside, Eric confronts and shoots the Professor, who is revealed to have had a gigantic bird's body underneath the cloaked coat he'd always worn. Stumbling at Eric, the creature falls to its death on the beach below. Eric and Trudy bury the body at sea and decide it's best that nobody knows what had happened.

An interesting cast. Robert Hutton had started playing juvenile leads, then went on to a string of largely minor genre flicks (MAN WITHOUT A BODY, INVISIBLE INVADERS, THE SLIME PEOPLE, COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK, TROG).

Broderick Crawford had visibly slummed following his role in BORN YESTERDAY, making a few genre TV movies, and was best remembered for the television series HIGHWAY PATROL.

A veteran of over 120 feature films, Akim Tamiroff had also appeared in Godard's ALPHAVILLE.

Diane Clair appeared in THE HAUNTING and Hammer's PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES.

Not a bad watch, though more for Tamiroff's eccentric performance than for Hutton's rather bland heroics.

Review :

There's no women or prehistory, but there is a planet!

With a title like "Women of the Prehistoric Planet" I envisioned a Lost World type movie in which scantily-clad amazonian beauties ride dinosaurs, fight against half-animal savages and a harsh, unforgiving environment. But with only one women, some forced perspective lizards that com-bust on impact, and a bunch of white guys straight out of the U.S. Navy, one can only wonder what the creators of this movie were thinking when they came up with the title.

To be fair, there are some legitimate scientific ideas that are dealt with in the movie, even if the writers don't understand how they really work. For example, the writers were correct in saying that when you travel near the speed of light time slows down, so that a three week journey for the astronauts aboard the spaceship is perceived by those on the planet as taking eighteen years. However, the perception of the people down on the planet has nothing to do with the speed of the planet's rotation but the way in which the planet's matter distorts the space time continuum.

The real plot of this movie is that a spaceship (Cosmos III) is hijacked by the primitive Centurions (a.k.a., non-white people) who probably perform menial domestic services for the crew aboard the spaceship. The ship crash lands on an unexplored planet with only a few survivors. Another ship in the vicinity (Cosmos IV?), moving at nearly the speed of light, travels to rescue the survivors (a three week journey on the spaceship, but an eighteen year wait on the planet). Once on the ground a group of idiots looking like U.S. Navy officers are dispatched to find the crash site. Meanwhile, a beautiful Centurion girl (the ultra-sexy Irene Tsu as Linda) wanders off and encounters a mysterious stranger named Tang who is also a Centurion. Obviously, he's the son of the survivors of the crash eighteen years earlier.

The story of Linda and Tang is probably the most interesting aspect of this movie. Through their adventures together they fall in love but must still deal with the tension of growing up in two very different environments. The other aspect of the plot has to do with clumsy idiots falling off logs into acid pools and shooting at anything that moves with their ultra high tech .44 pistols. The ending of this movie will surprise no one.

Terrible unfunny spy spoof

Tom Adams is Agent Vine (not Bond) in this film that is so unfunny that it runs way too serious and makes the film look like a poorman's James Bond clone. The opening scene involving agent dressed in drags, cool opening credit, and the Sidney James scene is the only highlight in this film. Either than that, the film is just plain boring. Adams played the character well, but the script didn't leave him to do much spoof or comedy that he's character runs flat. Very disjointed script. Not recommended.

This film is an absolute must see for all Cary Grant fans !!! It is a superb twist of romance and comedy.. although surprisingly it's not Cary whose on course for the romance, rather he plays the matchmaker !! and wonderful he is at it too !!!

There are many highlights to this film... watch out for the way Cary talks his way into sharing Samantha Eggar's flat, and when he runs in the race in his boxer shorts and vest !!! (a hilarious moment) and finally the most heart rending moment when he's outside at the end of the film and he lets the shutters go up between the two lovebirds, allowing them to be be together !!! Will definitely make you say aww !!!

This film is absolutely brilliant and definitely in my top 5 Cary Grant films !!

a must for Cary Grant fans !!!!

A Foreign Film Classic

It's World War I, and a Scottish Private named Plumpick (Alan Bates) is ordered to infiltrate a French village and stop a bomb that the Germans have planted from going off. Upon arriving, Plumpick discovers the entire village deserted, except for the patients of the local insane asylum, who have been left behind. The patients soon escape the asylum, play dress-up with the various clothes they find lying around the village, and take it over. Not only this, but they crown Plumpick their king! With the German army still in the vicinity nearby, Plumpick must find the bomb, diffuse it, and save his "subjects" from certain death....

An all-time foreign film classic, "Le Roi De Coeur," aka "King Of Hearts," is a marvelous movie, full of sweetness, charm, and both clever comedy & fine drama that also comments very well on the stupidity of war. Alan Bates, who sadly passed away recently, is simply wonderful as Private Plumpick, as is the lovely Genevieve Bujold as the young patient named Poppy that Plumpick falls for, and Adolfo Celi is quite funny as Plumpick's stuffy superior officer. The rest of the film's big ensemble cast, whether playing the asylum patients or various soldiers, are all excellent, too.

The only thing that stops "King Of Hearts" from being perfect is that it *could* very well be argued that the insane asylum patients in this movie aren't...well, *insane* enough. They may speak strangely to one another or to Private Plumpick, but, for the most part, they act & behave quite coherently. But other than that, "King Of Hearts" is a very charming foreign film, and one of the very best films of the late, great Alan Bates. Definitely seek this one out.

Excellent Political Spaghetti Western By Damiano Damiani!

Damiano Damiani's masterpiece "El Chuncho Quién Sabe?" aka. "A Bullet For The General" of 1967 is a very political Spaghetti Western set in the Mexican Revolution. A quite brutal tale about ideals, greed, friendship and selfishness, is not only a very entertaining Spaghetti Western, but also a unique study of an idealistic man's struggle between his greed and desire for wealth on the one hand, and his beliefs and ideals on the other hand.

El Chuncho (Gian Maria Volontè) is a bandit and revolutionary with a strong fondness for women, alcohol and cigars. Along with his slightly insane, but religious and very idealistic brother El Santo (Klaus Kinski), he leads a gang of bandits with beliefs, who help the poor and rob the government's army to sell the weapons to the revolutionary army. When the gang is joined by Bill Tate, an American who, due to his youth, is just referred to as "El Nino" by El Chuncho and his fellow Mexican bandidos, the gang leader starts to befriend with the gringo. El Nino, however is basically almost the opposite of El Chuncho, he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke and he doesn't waste his time with women, and neither does he believe in any causes or ideals, the only thing he is interested in is quick and good money. His friendship to the baby-faced but selfish and cold-blooded Nino, becomes a breaking test for Chuncho, who is torn between his greed and his ideals.

Although Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci are two of my favorite directors of all-time, and their movies "Giù La Testa" ("Duck You Sucker", Leone) and "Il Mercenario" ("The Mercenary", Corbucci), are two awesome movies, and furthermore there are quite a few more excellent Mexican Revolution Spaghetti Westerns , I would name "A Bullet for the General" as my favorite of the Mexican-Revolution-themed Spaghetti Westerns. The acting in this movie is superb. Gian Maria Volontè played in four Spaghetti Westerns and each one of them is a masterpiece. After his excellent performances in "A Fistful Of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More" and Sergio Sollima's "Faccia A Faccia"/"Face To Face", Volontè is superb as El Chuncho, the most lovable Spaghetti Western character he played. Klaus Kinski is great as always, the character of the rather crazy but idealistic El Santo is quite unusual, since Kinski's roles in Italian Westerns were, with a few exceptions, normally those of extremely cold blooded and selfish killers, who didn't think of anybody but themselves. Lou Castel perfectly fits into the role of baby-faced El Nino, and he manages to point out his character's cleverness and selfishness in a very good way. The directing by Damiano Damiani is brilliant and so is the cinematography. I would have rated this 10/10 if it wasn't for he one minor flaw: The score by Ennio Morricone and Louis Bavalov is good, but it is no quite as great as it could have been as it can't compete with the brilliance of other Morricone scores. Nevertheless, an excellent film!

A brutal, witty and very political Spaghetti Western, "A Bullet For The General" is an excellent film that genre-fans, and film buffs in general should not miss!

Intriguing enough science-gone-wrong thriller from Britain. There's some decent suspense and occasional shock (no pun intended) to be had. The cast isn't half bad, star Bryant Haliday is the best as both the films tragic hero and semi-frightening villain. The makeup work on Haliday isn't half bad. Nice dramatic music score as well.

Over all a decent enough sci-fi flick, but it doesn't match The Fly.

Director Andrew V. McLaglen's "The Rare Breed" (1966) has a surprising amount of historical interest, both to students of the old west and to western genre film buffs. It is actually a fairly accurate (if fictionalized) account of the displacement of Longhorn cattle on the Texas range by intentional interbreeding with more conventional bulls (in this case a Hereford named Vindicator).

Just as interesting is the film's position as one of the early intentional parodies of the western genre. While less obvious than in "Cat Ballou" (1965), the self-reflexive elements and parody are there if you look close. The most obvious are Brian Keith's overplayed (almost expressionistic) Scotsman and McLaglen's juxtaposition of classic John Ford outdoor scenery with obvious sound stage shots-including matte paintings by Albert Whitlock. And McLaglen rounds out his cast with genre favorites Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., and Jack Elam.

But "The Rare Breed's" real claim to fame is as the first "chick flick" western. It is likely to appeal more to women than men viewers as the story is told from the point of view of its heroine Hilary Price (Juliet Mills), who sets out with her parents to bring a small herd of cattle from Hertfordshire (England) to the American west. Unfortunately her father dies on the ocean voyage so Hilary and her mother Martha (Maureen O'Hara) are faced with the daunting task of completing what had been her father's dream.

Mills is wonderful in this role and it really suits her. She is a placid observer of the strange land in which she finds herself while her mother is almost savagely reactive. Yet Mills gets all the really good lines as Hilary injects a lot of wit and wry humor into the story. McLaglen gives real dimension to only two of the characters, Hilary and "Bulldog" Sam Burnett (Jimmy Stewart). Burnett is a cowhand who starts out to swindle the two women but ends up being completed by them; eventually becoming a father/husband replacement to Hilary and Martha respectively, as well as a complete believer in their mission to change the nature of the American cattle industry.

But Burnett has to come a long way to make this transition as he begins by calling the symbolically named Vindicator a muley bull (because it has no horns). His reaction does not get him off to a good start with the protective Hilary, who has raised Vindicator from a calf. The bull follows her around like a dog and is easily quieted with a verse from "God Save the Queen".

Entertaining but not riveting, this unique example of the genre is a nice change of pace. Unfortunately the scenes between Keith and O'Hara will make you think more of Disney's original "The Parent Trap" than the film you thought you were watching.

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Intense

The beauty of this film is its simplicity. Rabies strikes a small village and a race against time begins. The film shows how intense a movie can be with a very low budget. Ford gives his usual classic understated performance as a washed up doctor but he can be believed in any role. Stella Stevens is excellent. I saw this film in the theater and have not been able to find it on video.
