That shameless child ...
L'AMANTE DI GRAMIGNA offers what has to be one of Stefania's nicest, cutest nude scenes—verging on pedophilia (yet she was far beyond the age limit); it's quite an awesome piece of teen exploitation. It is the gorgeous scene when the girl is inspected. The overall grotesque (the girl is minutely inspected by some hags, some menacing old-wives, as in Pasolini), the satire are keenly Italian.
Stefania undressed in many movies; this one retains a place of honor, undisputed.
She's an erotica legend; her nude scenes in La Chiave, Una Donna Allo Specchio, Il Conformista are very appreciated; L'AMANTE … has to be the earliest—and one of the most charming.
It's wonderful how Mme. Sandrelli was fit for erotica at almost any age—beginning early, and well into her '40s ….
The shameless child was 23 in GRAMIGNA—but looking indeed far younger. 26 years later she made Caramelle (1995) and then Ninfa Plebea (1996), and these are maybe her last nude appearances (meaning to be sexually provoking)—I have even seen a censored version of Ninfa Plebea (1996). It's my guess that she used a body double in Caramelle (1995)—as in one close—up that tit certainly isn't hers.

I saw this back when it was released in Paris. In those days I had only begun to watch films seriously so I didn't have much experience concerning when to leave or when I was allowed to get bored. I stayed through the whole thing - all three hours plus - and came out genuinely perplexed. It was a talkathon, no question about that, and at times it seemed to me that the actors were just making things up as they went along, just treading dramatic water as it were. Although not much of anything happened or was even said, the characters discussed the nothingness to the point of madness, I thought. It seemed at the time to be a huge joke on the audience. The director did in fact make a commercially viable film years late with "Celine et Julie...", still quite long - to the point of undermining itself - but not as obnoxiously obsessed with its "meaning" or "significance". There are in fact many good French films out there that aren't endurance contests as I subsequently found out.

Lingers for Decades
Like many of the other commentators, I saw this (once only!) when roughly the same age as the boys in the movie. 30+ years later I still find myself thinking about it from time to time. The themes of friendship, loyalty and commitment should be equally appealing to an adult viewer.
I seem to recall the subtitle "The War" appearing on the screen all those years ago. Maybe it is a false memory, driven by the film's notion of "the good us" vs "the evil them" - which is the undercurrent of the book & movie, and is usually the undercurrent of most actual wars. Even as a kid you could understand the not so subtle message that the movie was delivering.
The original 1906 book was written by Hungarian Ferenc Molnár during the long spiral of European politics into WWI. The book is still a standard read in many European grade schools. It was also voted the second favourite book in Hungary in 2005.
This movie, about Hungarian kids, was filmed in Finland. I wonder if the language might be the reason for this film not being available on DVD in an English version. Quite unfortunate, as this was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film - losing to the Russian 8 hour version of War and Peace (Voyna i Mir).

Strange surprise from Mexico
In 1968, legendary horror icons John Carradine and Basil Rathbone traveled to Mexico to film "Autopsia De Un Fantasma", a low-budget horror movie that went to become a Cult film due to its cast. By strange reasons (some state that Carradine's career was experiencing a dry spell at the time), Carradine stayed after that and made four low-budget horror films for producer Luis Enrique Vergara. In Filmica Vergara Productions, Carradine would face Mexican wrestler Mil Máscaras in "Pacto Diabólico" ("Diabolical Pact") and "Enigma De Muerte" ("Secret of Death"), as well as playing the old Count Dracula one more time in "Las Vampiras" ("The Vampire Girls"), but the best of the four films would be the last one, an odd slasher with sci-fi undertones named "La Señora Muerte" ("Mrs. Death").
"La Señora Muerte" is the story of Marlene (Regina Torné), a successful fashion designer who is deeply in love with his husband, Dr. Andrés (Victor Junco) and has a life of happiness. However, this soon comes to a sudden end when Andrés has a fatal heart attack due to Cancer. Before collapsing, Andrés asks Marlene to take him to Dr. Favel (John Carradine), as he will be the only one able to help her. In Dr. Favel's lair, the strange scientist attempts to bring back Andrés using Marlene's blood in a radioactive experiment that tragically fails, making Marlene's body "unstable" due to radiation (making her go from deformed creature to beautiful woman at moments). Favel thinks he needs larger amounts of women's blood, so now Marlene must kill for blood not only to return to normality, but also to save her husband's life.
At first sight, "La Señora Muerte" looks like a typical horror film about a mad scientist (with flashy machines and a hunchbacked assistant), however, after Marlene becomes mutated, the film leaves Dr. Favel and becomes a really original slasher were the focus is not on the victims, but on the killer herself. We really can see the progression of this female serial killer, as her first killings are exact and effective, but as guilt begins to corrode her, her spirit begins to crumble. Written by Ramón Obón, the film is a nice surprise, as the sudden change of tone (from sci-fi to slasher) is actually beneficial, and really sets the film apart from other examples of Mexican horror (it even feels as if it was written by two very different writers).
As the last film of Jaime Salvador (experienced Mexican director who started with the excellent "El Jorobado" back in 1943), the film could be seen as yet another example of the bad state of Mexican industry after the end of the "Golden Age of Mexican Cinema". While "La Señora Muerte" is not really a bad film, Salvador's execution of the script is very anachronistic at times (the scenes with John Carradine seem to be taken out of a 50s film and forced into the movie), although to his credit, some of the scenes of the "slasher part" of the film are very well crafted, in an almost Giallo style.
While John Carradine's presence is surprising, and gives the film the feeling of a rarity, his performance is kind of regular, and although somewhat effective, at times he feels definitely out of place (the bad way the script is structured in his scenes doesn't really help him). Still, he manages to be haunting at times, despite what he had to work with (and the awful Spanish dubbing his character suffers). Quite and opposite image is Regina Torné as Marlene, who really transmits the pain and the suffering of someone who is forced to kill to survive, almost like a modern vampire. The rest of the cast is pretty average and simply are there to do the job.
The main problem of "La Señora Muerte" is neither the low-budget nor Salvador's anachronistic direction, the real problem is that the movie feels as two very different films mixed together. What could had been an excellent Giallo style slasher suffers the inclusion of themes and motives of a 50s mad scientist tale, and the contrast between them is huge. While the "slasher part" is dark, creepy and almost elegant, the "mad scientist part" has bright colors, bad special effects and hammy acting; and is this sharp contrast between them what in the end almost kills the film, as it feels as if the mad scientist story arc was included just to get Carradine in the movie.
"La Señora Muerte" is an oddity not only because of the inclusion of John Carradine in the cast, but also because of the strange way the film is crafted, as well as the inventive slasher story arc it has. While it would be easy to discard it as another 60s bad horror (as the first scenes seem to point out), it becomes into a different kind of beast past the wacky intro. A lost obscure gem that deserves at least more recognition. 6/10

Exciting, family entertainment
Emerald of Artatama is one of 25 films made by producer Sid Pink in an amazingly prolific period while he was in Spain during the seven year period of 1961-1968. Other notable films of this output were Pyro (a colorful prefigurement of the slasher film), Finger on the Trigger (first Western made in Spain) and Madigan's Millions, famous for the first screen appearance of Dustin Hoffman. Pink's recollections of this hectic yet productive period are detailed in his autobiography, So You Want to Make Movies, published by Pineapple Press of Sarasota, Florida.
Veteran tough guy Rory Calhoun stars as a hard-drinking, two-fisted womanizer and (lovable) con-man attempting to find the Tomb of Artatama, rumored to house an emerald as large as a man's fist. The story follows his attempts to find a crew, get financing, and the inevitable search for the lost tomb. Along the way, he must tackle hijackers, loan sharks, desert bandits, clinging women and a writer/friend who has long since found solace in alcohol.
This kind of film was probably dated even as of 1967, but Pink peoples it with quirky characters and dialog that knowingly winks at its anachronistic origins.
My OOP video boasts lush colors and a well-crafted, comic-book influenced video jacket. The movie itself is visual impressive, with bustling bazarre scenes, majestic vistas of Egypt, and a sense of timelessness that suggests modern audiences who enjoyed the new Mummy movies, the TV series The Search, and various Tomb Raider knock-offs will find much to appreciate here.
With the recent passing of Sidney Pink, it is hoped that his monumental output will find its eventual home on DVD.

Slight but watchable comic book style spy film from Jess Franco
"Two Undercover Angels" is a fun and watchable if very slight film from Jess Franco, one of the most notorious and controversial filmmakers in cult film circles. The man made several truly amazing and captivating films, some entertaining diversions, and a lot of absolute crap. This falls in the middle category. Its a reasonably entertaining piece of pop art whimsy thats completely forgotten about once its over with. It shows that Franco, despite being a talented filmmaker, was extremely commercial and not prone at all to cash-ins. This campy little film seems quickly made to capitalize on the success of both "Barbarella" and "Danger: Diabolik".
There's a good amount of elements here that Franco is known for. A loopy and illogical plot (it is much easier to follow than his more well known films however), some crazy villains, pointless but welcome nudity, and beautiful women. The two undercover angels of the title are Janine Reynaud (who was in "Succubus", one of Franco's finest) and Rosanna Yanni, and are more than watchable whenever on screen. Adrian Hoven makes an amusing villain (he was also in "Succubus" and later the notorious "Mark of the Devil"). "Two Undercover Angels" is kind of like a bag of chips - its fun while it lasts, but ultimately pretty unsubstantial. It's entertaining, but completely forgettable and Franco's made much better films. (5/10)

Good movie indeed !
First thing that impressed me was the 60's fashion in Spain, the cars, women, men and traffic in Barcelona. If you had the opportunity to see some Godard or Bunuel films, you can recognize the Spain under Franco (grayness and sadness) compared to the youthful France of Bardot, de Funes and Bourville. The characters in "Ditirambo" are strange because they barely smile, their encounters are unexpected and later prove to be planned, which makes the movie the more interesting because you don't know why are they there and what will be the outcome. The main character, Ditirambo, seems to be oblivious to everything that happens to him. All in all, a well done film and a worthy sample of the 60's Europe.

Disappointing sequel to 'Sadisterotica'.
Unfortunately the version of 'Kiss Me Monster' I watched was the 75 minute, badly dubbed version. I'm blaming most of the movie's inadequacies on that. I enjoyed 'Sadisterotica' as a change of pace for Jess Franco - a campy spy thriller rather than his more typical erotic nightmares on film - but this is nowhere near as good.
The 'Red Lips' detective team (Janine Reynaud and Rosanna Yanni) return, as do a few Franco regulars. The plot this time around is paper thin. Some sheet music leads the girls to an island where a missing scientist has been experimenting on people. They pose as saxophonists (!) while they investigate the mysterious goings on there, which somehow involve a secret cult. There's all the usual double crosses, plot twists, skimpy outfits, and a totally gratuitous go-go dancing sequence, but the emphasis this time around is more on humour ("humour" - it isn't the least bit amusing) rather than action. Not Franco's best effort, and certainly not a good introduction to his oeuvre. 'Vampiros Lesbos' and 'Succubus' are still the best way for newcomers to begin.

Is there any purpose to this wretched film? The long drown-out sidehacking scenes? When Rommel visits the artist? When Rommel hits Big Jake?
If Ross Hagen was attempting some profound message, he's completely lost me. Bad acting, bad ending. But beyond bad is the acting we get from three guys: Big Jake, Crap out, and Cooch/Gooch. I don't know where Ross Hagen found these guys and I don't WANT to know.
Is there any significance to J.C.'s name (Jesus Christ)? Perhaps I'm giving Mr. Hagen a bit too much credit. Extra demerits for an overly brutal rape scene.

a mixed bag but there are delights
Even as I write this i'm not really sure how much I did or didn't enjoy this. Fine title but misleading, the titular garments appear but to no significant extent. There are pluses and minuses in this. It moved along nicely and was generally well directed, particularly the dance, pub and party scenes, which seem to trip up the best of directors. The script is a mess and I suppose here lies the problem. Is this a 'Confessions' type romp? Certainly not. A serious and well argued critique of the times. No, again and I guess it is the fact that it probably falls between these two that is the biggest problem. Getting to have sex is treated as a joke and then marriage and the question of abortion are treated seriously. Its a mixed bag but there are delights, many advertising street hoardings and London back streets, infuriatingly unidentified plus the aforementioned indoor gatherings. Victor Henry strikes me as an unconvincing character, either joshing wildly or moralising terribly. No the only star here and she shines pretty brightly in one of her earlier roles, is Susan George.

Twists galore in a well done and entertaining Italian thriller!
Shadow of Death is a little known Italian thriller, but also a very interesting one and it's certainly a film that doesn't deserve to be missed. The film is often considered a part of the Giallo genre; and although it lacks many of the genre trademarks, the fact that it features a few; as well as the fact that it was released in 1969, mean that it just about qualifies as a part of the genre. The film takes in the classic thriller plot line of a wife wanting to kill her husband for financial gain and mixes this with the idea of wanting to send someone insane (this was also featured in Umberto Lenzi's well revered Giallo Orgasmo) and the idea of identical twins. The film begins as we witness a stranger arrive in town. He quickly goes to see his ex-lover Denise, who is not so happily married to John; and is having an affair with his identical twin brother Peter. They are also plotting to send John insane. After the stranger (later revealed to be a man named Gert) has his blackmail attempts rebuked, the pair decide to enlist his help for their plot.
Director Javier Setó cleverly gives his film a very claustrophobic setting, which ensures that the focus is always on the main characters. The storyline is twisted and clever; and the characters play a very important part in the proceedings. The director ensures that there's a good reason for all their motivations; and while most of them do wear their emotions on their sleeves, it still provides a relatively engaging viewing. There isn't a great deal of variety in terms of the locations used but the style and atmosphere always fits the film, and this makes up for it. The plot at times does get a bit choppy and it doesn't always make complete sense; but generally speaking the film flows fairly well and does more than enough to keep the audience interested for the eighty five minute running time. As we boil down to the climax and more twists come into play; things do get very interesting. Overall, this is a well thought-out and well put together little thriller and while I wouldn't quite call it a must see, it is very much worth a look if you can find a copy.

I Do Love A Good Stinky Cheese
A stinky, horrible, ghastly piece of cheese! (To quote the gnome statue in those television commercials for an intenet travel site.) Now that this horror is available for cheap-o prices, I would recommend it for bad film fans. Bad acting, cheap sets and leaden pacing abound. John Carradine is always fun to watch, no matter how bad the movie he is in, and he did many, many stinkers of Z-grade budgets. Probably my favorite part is the gratuitous opening scene which shows nice footage of Marineland in Los Angeles (Rancho Palos Verdes, I believe) closed and torn down decades ago. There was also some nice cinematography; I noted the scene where the robed, torch-bearing figures trudge across the beach in the moonlight. Nice image.
This film had exteriors shot mainly at Scotty's Castle (I think) in Death Valley, hundreds of miles from the ocean. But, through the magic of editing, it appears to be about a mile from the beach!
This movie is part of the Horrible Horrors Volume 2 Box Set from Rhino, eight bad horror movies for only $25 retail (about $18 street!)! Worth the freight for fans of cheesy, crusty, musty, dusty, horror flicks.

Quizzical and somewhat painful Argentinean softcore porn flick has the good quality of being one of the few competent unions of exploitation with mainstream genre film. In this case, sci-fi, and see _Flesh Gordon_ if you have any doubts about how difficult a genre fusion of this kind can be. The movie drags at times, but at others is fabulously bizarre, probably because of the tortured logic Vieyra has to use to establish the (relatively) intricate plot without compromising the explicit scenes. Humpp's legendary sequence -- a weird, mutated critter playing an unidentifiable lutish instrument while people mill about a foggy courtyard -- is strange beyond description.
