Cronin Mitchell is an average guy whose face is disfigured by a falling electrical power line in which he somehow acquires the gift/curse of strange psychic powers. After withdrawing from public life, 'Mitch' makes a living as a fortune teller when he's approached by an ugly hag who offers to restore his good looks if he becomes her lover. Mitch reluctantly agrees, and although his face is restored, people around him see his lover as an attractive young woman named Ellen. When news of Mitch's psychic powers leak out, he goes on the road with Ellen from city to city and town to town helping people solve crimes. After expelling a ghost from a funeral home, Mitch and Ellen are sent to a small Illinois town to find the identity of a serial killer. But the government sends along a crackpot psychiatrist/playboy, named Dr. Alex Jordan, to oversee the case and possibly debunk Mitch's psychic abilities. When Dr. Jordan turns his sights on Ellen and plots to steal her away from Mitch, she goes ...

Review :

A film that lives up to its title

H.G. Lewis has made some bizarre films, but none more bizarre than this one. Yep, its even more out there than "The Wizard of Gore". Its certainly not his most entertaining film and definitely not the best starting place for this unique exploitation filmmaker, but the occasional bits of camp surrealism that prefigured his other films is on full drive here. Its not a gore picture or one of his sexploitation films. In fact, there's really nothing here that would get anything more than a PG rating from the MPAA, outside of maybe the LSD sequence. Still, its truly something weird. And yes, the single greatest video company ever did take their name and logo from this.

As usual with H.G. Lewis films, its really poorly made. Lewis was a great showman but never an accomplished director, and just like most of his films this often drags. The acting alternates between being wooden and over-the-top, the "logic" none existent, and when viewed on close inspection, the reasoning behind the characters actions becomes almost surreal. Still, no one goes into these films expecting Orson Welles, and this delivers plenty of cheap thrills. The fact that its also so damn bizarre makes it even better. Plus, Elizabeth Lee is possibly the best looking actress ever in a Lewis film, which is saying a good deal. The more I see of these acid exploitation films, the more I can't get enough of them. George and Martha are a middle aged married couple, whose charged relationship is defined by vitriolic verbal battles, which underlies what seems like an emotional dependence upon each other. This verbal abuse is fueled by an excessive consumption of alcohol. George being an associate History professor in a New Carthage university where Martha's father is the President adds an extra dimension to their relationship. Late one Saturday evening after a faculty mixer, Martha invites Nick and Honey, an ambitious young Biology professor new to the university and his mousy wife, over for a nightcap. As the evening progresses, Nick and Honey, plied with more alcohol, get caught up in George and Martha's games of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha's unseen sixteen year old son, whose birthday is the following day.

That's what comes from too much alcohol and too few mutual respect

'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' tells the story of two couples that are quite different at first sight - one used to each other for years, the other one rather freshly wed in comparison. Actually it doesn't tell their story, but it displays their relationships.

The film begins on a Sunday morning at 2 o'clock, right after a party, and ends just after the sun rises. In these few hours we get to know these four people better then we might possibly want.

George and Martha are the older couple. He is a history professor, she is the daughter of the head of the university. Their relationship seems to be from hell, full of mutual disgust and humiliation. Their guests are Nick and Honey. He is the new, ambitious biology professor, she is his naive young wive. As all these four characters are more or less drunk throughout the entire film, alcohol works as a catalyst, and we quickly see the different kind of character traits they have: George is a cynic, Martha loves to torment her husband, Nick is an opportunist and Honey is very much a stupid blonde.

The two relationships deserve closer examination: We wonder why Martha and George married in the first place. They keep swearing at each other. Martha can't stop humiliating George, when they are alone as well as when Nick and Honey are there. Maybe there is still a rest of love in them, but there mutual respect has vanished completely. And then there is the strange story of their son, who is supposed to visit on his birthday. They way George and Martha talk about him make us feel that there is something peculiar about him. At the end we get to know more about him, and we can only guess how important the son is for their relationship.

Nick and Honey, on the other hand, seem to be quite the opposite. But, being used as weapons by the older couple, we see that their relationship isn't as perfect as it seems to be, either. Nick didn't marry Honey because he loved her, but because he thought she was pregnant and because of her money. And when Martha tries to seduce him to tease George, he plays the game with her, always in mind that this woman's father is the head of the university. Honey, on the other hand, is much more emotional than her husband, but she also is the most passive character, and the one most affected by the alcohol.

Mike Nichols assembled an outstanding cast for his film. Casting Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton as Martha and George is a stroke of genius - not only are they terrific actors, but it also heats the imagination of the viewer how much their real-life-marriage resembled the relationship they had in this film. Elizabeth Taylor outshines her co-stars a little. Never was she any better than in this one; although her character is the meanest in the film, she manages that we still feel compassion for her at the end. But Richard Burton, George Segal and especially Sandy Dennis deliver memorable performances, too.

'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' succeeds at something rather difficult: It makes us care for characters we wouldn't want to have anything to do with in real life. And although it actually consist of nothing but four people talking for two hours, it never bored us for a second.

a wonderful red convertible

I don't know what the circumstances were under which Lenzi took the helm of this movie but the fact that he didn't use his own name says something. I'm guessing he did this at the last moment for cash and had no say in the script and even then I'm not sure why he bothered. Yoko Tani is the best thing in this and she has a couple of weak cat fights. That I give this boring so called spy tale anything is down to the way it looked and that we glimpsed several cities and there was the glimpse of a wonderful red convertible at one point. Uncharismatic lead, maybe he thought if he was to appear British, he should appear as bland as possible, who knows? Who even cares and why am I writing about this 90 minutes of wasted time? Just in the remote chance that someone can find and apply that poster!

Steven Shorter is the ultimate British music star. His music is listened to by everyone from pre-teens to grandparents. He has no trace of public bad habits or drug involvement. Everyone in Britain loves him. His handlers begin to use his popularity for projects like increasing the consumption of apples after a bumper crop as an aid to farmers. The handlers decide that Steven should support God and Country next. This leads to, among other things, a rock version of "Onward Christian Soldiers," and the inclusion of a Nazi salute to make it clear (to the viewer) how far the British population will be taken for love of God and Country under Steven's guidance. Steven is very plastic in his direction, shifting as his handlers point him toward new projects until he meets Vanessa Ritchie, an artist who makes him look at what's happening.

We will conform!

Privilege was Peter Watkins' feature length debut. Using the faux documentary style, Watkins' follows a year in the life of a pop star. Stephen Shorter, Britian's most beloved pop icon. Shorter's handlers pimp him out to the highest bidder. What's so scary about this movie is how it's still relevant, even in today's society. One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when the Church of England uses Shorter's services to try and lure more converts. Utilizing a set that's eerily reminded me of a large Nazi youth rally (crosses replacing swastikas) The crowd is led by a young charismatic priest (who speeches commands an audience like Hitler)he leads the audience chanting "We will conform".

Critics called this movie heavy handed and others called it paranoid. I say it's excellent and Mr. Watkins did a fantastic job directing this film. It's too bad this movie's virtually impossible to find. Oh well, if you ever happen to come across it don't even stop and pause. Watch it!

Highly recommended.

Plodding...

Literally: plodding. With a title like SANTO VS. THE HEADHUNTERS, one might expect... well, some headhunting, if nothing else. Unfortunately, the hunting of heads is kept to a bare minimum, as is the action (the REAL action, although Santo- or a double- wrestles a 'gator and a leopard). The great bulk of this movie is comprised of very, very, very long scenes of people WALKING. Most of this walking is set to Muzak to keep the viewer from nodding off, but it's just not enough. You'll find yourself startling yourself awake with your own snoring; it's THAT bad. Santo, though he appears in the first shot (being choked by an assailant), doesn't really have a lot to do until near the end, when he finally gets to knock some heads- but it's too little, too late.
