Review :

Single unforgettable and entertaining film by J.M:Forqué

In the populous city of Madrid, "Pepe" (JLLópez Vázquez), is: anonymous, gray, and imprecise street-sweeper. "Pepe" is a member of that ghostly dawn brigade, to blow hose, clean the streets at dawn. One day "Pepe" find a million pesetas in a bin. Financial need of this poor street-sweeper suggests keeping the money, but his wife "Consuelo" (Julia Gutiérrez Caba), advises that meets their civic duty and return the money

"Un millón en la basura" is one of those movies that deserve modest but memorable being displayed again. With a simple story and endearing, very well developed, entertains and keeps the interest, because as the intentions of the protagonists to the money found are not the same, do not know what will happen in the end. Maybe we reprove some moralizing tone and a final scene somewhat naive that surely is within the standards of the day. But the truth is that softens see the hardships and tribulations that have this family with money. Furthermore, while José Luis López Vázquez in the magnificent cast, not missing another laugh. The highlight scenes can be discussion among co-workers about the money found, and another discussion between Peep's fathers, "María" and "Joaquin" (Aurora Redondo, and Rafael López Somoza) with the two opposing views.

Another attraction of the film is its characters, well defined and credible, both protagonists and extraordinary supporting cast, all excellently interpreted.

Review :

A rare and forgotten gem from Italy

A rather good action yarn from the other side of the Alps. Fast paced and with a good characterization we did not expect from such an Italian crime flick. The story of a petty hoodlum who pulls jewelry store heists, in broad daylight, smashing up the shop windows. He has accomplices for these robberies, but a smart and dedicated cop - Gian Maria Volonte - is determined to catch him. In this purpose, he intends to focus on the gangster's girl friend. Good action sequences, car chases, an Ennio Morricone score, all mixed up and you may feel satisfied with this effective crime movie.

Some locations in France, in Paris to be accurate.

A really good surprise.

Done in a similar style to the musical duo's TV show "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour", this film is more a series of unconnected skits and parodies than a single running plot. When Sonny gets offered a role in a movie, he talks Cher into giving it a try. The proposed script, however, turns out to be awful, but in order to get out of doing this stinker of a project, Sonny has just ten days to come with his own better script. The rest of the film follows his daydreams as he plots out possible storylines starring him as a Wild West sheriff, a jungle king, and as a private eye.

Entertaining!

If you enjoy off the wall humor, and have a fondness for 60's nostalgia, you will like this movie (in my opinion). I found the film to be good-natured, a bit silly in spots, and touched with a slightly warped sense of humor that held my attention for the relatively short run-time. I just wish that Cher had a larger role in this one, but, I guess (at the time), Sonny was considered the real "talent." Granted, Sonny can't sing very well (especially so when compared to Cher), however, he seems to be having a "good time" making the movies within the movie. The Western spoof is especially entertaining.

This is a guilty pleasure movie. It amused me, made me smile a few times, and that is enough for me to recommend it!

Of obscure historical interest at best

A scrappy little guy and his friend the big lovable bruiser, a pair shamelessly patterned after the Terence Hill / Bud Spencer movies of the time, are tossed off the kibbutz and find themselves among the dazzling glitter of Tel Aviv... a glitter which in 1975 seems to consist of a few cafés and the big plaza outside city hall. They run into a melodrama of the creakiest kind, in which a kindly old man is going to lose his factory if he doesn't let the villain marry his beautiful daughter, but they clobber the baddies and save the day. Director George Ovadia is more at home in melodrama than in action comedy-- I think that to this day there hasn't been a successful Israeli action comedy-- and he includes a scene of attempted rape that is a bit more than perfunctory. What's of interest? The presence of a few people famous for other things. The leads are Uri Zohar, who retains a large following for films which (unlike this one) he directed himself, and Paul Smith, who went on to international fame in DUNE, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, and POPEYE among other films. Some songs are performed by Boaz Sharabi, very young here and still attempting to sing in English. Once he gave up the idea of international stardom and concentrated on Hebrew, he consolidated a place for himself at the very top of the Israeli musical pantheon.

The pro is assigned an assistant, Tony Lo Bello, whom he teaches the ropes as they pursue their prey through Paris. The plot thickens when a beautiful woman identifies the target, but it turns out he has killed the wrong man! Corpses pile up as Harris wonders whom he can really trust.

Hit man Robert Webber wants out of the organization but takes on one more job

"Hired Killer" is a sleeper and a really good noir. Robert Webber is a hit man for the "organization", having gotten into this line of work by being a top military sniper. Now he's grown tired of the killing.

The opening sequence shows him at work, and it's as good a wordless sequence as you will see, as he carries out an assignment from the roof of a building. New York City's buildings play a part as a kind of cold, incommunicative but dominating landscape that houses the hidden office and people that occupy this man-made jungle and seek advantage over one another, killing if need be. Webber gets his payoff from a business-like organization member in one of these anonymous offices that could be that of any banker, lawyer, publisher or advertising executive.

Webber turns down another generous deal to kill Frank Secchy in Paris. But when his brother is gunned down, Webber takes on the job. He usually works alone, but he's made to take on Franco Nero as both assistant, including muscle, and trainee. When they arrive in Paris, they meet with many difficulties. The main two are that Secchy has had plastic surgery, changing his appearance, and his location is unknown. Webber becomes a kind of detective searching for Secchy, with Nero, who one might not even recognize at this stage in his career.

The search and story turn out to be complex, with the elements of double cross, distrust, and deception all entering in. In a way, the atmosphere becomes as thick as the contemporary "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold". The opening scenes carry on the traditions of such noirs as "Murder by Contract" and "The Lineup". The absence of police and the deep immersion into the criminal element mark "Hired Killer" as a noir too.

Webber is good in the role. He's not at all psychopathic or kill-happy. He's professional, smart, shrewd and polite. Webber has always been an effective actor. Nero handles his role very nicely too, injecting just enough unease to make one wonder whether he will turn out to be what Jan-Michael Vincent was to Charles Bronson in "The Mechanic" (1972). The female support, Jeanne Valerie, does just fine too, playing an attractive drug addict. Her career ran 1959-1991.
