Youth Is Wasted On The Young

This movie is about four male high school students who took their university entrance exams and are just hanging around mostly. They have a connection with their teacher Mr. Otake and they go out drinking with him and 3 female classmates. Mr. Otake starts singing a bawdy Japanese folk song, a song sung throughout the film by the male characters. One night after heavy drinking, Otake pays for the girls and guys to stay at an inn since the trains have stopped running. Otake puts on the gas stove, falls drunkenly asleep and accidentally kills himself by poisoning. The girls are inconsolable, the guys nonchalant. The guys become obsessed with a fellow classmate, mostly known by her seat number 469. The film goes from there, with meeting her, meeting Otake's mistress and singing the song. This take on disenfranchised youth in Tokyo is very effective. Director Oshima Nagisa is well known for pushing the envelope (he directed the notorious "In The Realm Of The Senses")and this character study is interesting, with good young actors in the pivotal roles. The movie title notwithstanding, this is not a pornographic film, it has very little nudity and very little violence. Its just a story of attitude, indifference and, if not fear, wariness of what lies ahead. I liked the pacing in this film and generally feel you'll like it if you like Japanese drama. Not perfect, but an interesting film from a maverick director who has no problem making you think.

It doesn't amount to much in the end but it's visually inventive and fun to watch

This is a comedy first and foremost in the farcical European sense of the term. Tatsuya Nakadai's character is a naive meek teacher with a skin rash in his feet and a Renault Deuxceveau that farts smoke like Mr. Hulot's car in Jacques Tati's movie and for some inexplicable reason he becomes the target of an organisation called the "Japanese Population Control Agency" which sends wave after wave of quirky assassins his way. This group is led by the halfmad director of an insane asylum who is a fanatic of war and murder, an ex-Nazi who switches between Japanese and German for most of the movie and wears black gloved hands and a grotesque smile. In some ways all this recalls Peter Sellers' character from DR. STRANGELOVE and the movie has some of that crackerjack/gonzo ambiance.

It's all a bit inconsequential plotwise and the movie never develops the grim gravitas of Okamoto's better works because it must sprawl across a dozen different locations, from Tokyo's subways to a holiday resort in Mt. Fuji, and it must pause for Nakadai and his henchman to be shelled by the army before it can move on to its destination. A Spanish knife standoff between Nakadai (who in the process of the movie is turned from naive happy-go-lucky teacher to suave and sly, a Japanese version of Alain Delon which is oddly fitting for the kind of movie Age of Assassins is trying to be) and mad ex-Nazi scientist in a hall made up of brilliant art nouveau decorations and a dazzling whiteness that looks like something out of a Hiroshi Teshigahara movie.

This is even less of a Japanese New Wave film than Okamoto's subsequent THE HUMAN BULLET which marginally touched the outskirts of that niche occupied in the late 60's by the likes of Shohei Imamura and Nagisa Oshima. It does share, however, a similarity in the avantgarde sets, stylish setpieces, and general ironic absurdity, with Seijun Suzuki's idiosynchratic early 60's films leading up to BRANDED TO KILL, yet from the Pink Pantherish animated opening credits to the broad, sometimes goofy, humor, it is also closer to the Eurospy extravanzas of the 60's than the typical Japanese noir made in the early years of the decade in studios like Nikkatsu and Shintoho. In the same time it's a sendup of all that with typical for Okamoto jabs at militarism and war.

Everyone in the movie is looking for a gem called the Tear of Cleopatra but it's a Hitchcockian McGuffin, an opportunity for Okamoto to take us on a tour through a series of elaborate images whether they be footage of Hitler rearprojected through a car window or the severed head of a doll used by a hypnotist as an illuminated pendulum. It doesn't amount to much in the end but it's visually inventive and fun to watch.

Atmospheric but dull spy thriller

Jordan is an ex-secret agent who, after many years of service, gets the boot for "health reasons". So he plans to sell a secret and highly sought after formula - if he can locate all three pieces of paper that the formula is written on, that is. His former superiors believe that he is close to getting the formula all for himself, so they send one of his old friends to convince him to cooperate with them again. You have to give "A Ticket To Die" credit for capturing the feel of a "serious" spy movie, from the raincoats that all the men wear to the footsteps sometimes being the only sound. However, the story is muddled (characters and incidents are introduced and then left unresolved), the direction is static, and the hero is OK but rather colorless. Hardcore fans of mid-1960s Euro-spy fare may like parts of this film, but others will probably find it too dull to sit through. *1/2 out of 4.

Fuzzy Stockshots

People say that all you need to make a movie nowadays are a couple of actors in front of a greenscreen. The Jerry Cotton series proves they were doing it forty years ago, only with back projection. The series of bi weekly pulp novels were brought to the screen starring Rock Hudson's friend Georg Nader, and using the most American looking Germans they could find as support. This is the third entry, in which the crafty G-man has to find a stolen truckload of nitroglycerin (Wo is der Nitro?) before the stockshots of New York city surrounding him are evaporated.

You gotta be amazed by the sheer amount of grainy and faded footage of the Big Apple they found for every occasion (though sometimes it looks looks more like Vegas). Only once did they have to go out and film near some real life bushes. None of the cars have any windows either, leading to a crazy sequence where Cotton is disguised as a window cleaner to spy on some thugs. They try to shoot him but only hit glass and he almost falls to his death. At that moment his useless partner Phil walks in from the other side and gets hit on the head with the glass from a car window! This was probably cheaper to get than a breakable vase and also meant they could use the same sound effect twice.

This is the sort of series Roger Corman would have made had he lived outside of the U.S. (Rogier Kormann?). Bad guys include a jewelery stealin' platinum blonde and a crime boss who is lying down all the time (being massaged, having a steam bath or just relaxing while his cronies torture people). One of the best things is the soundtrack which changes style (cocktail music, blues) per scene. Jerry himself seems to have the Shadows as a backing group and sometimes we here "Thomas Crown Affair" like madness going on complete with incomprehensible lyrics. Time is running out and the temperature is rising, but it proves hard to get excited about action sequences on top of a bridge or in front of a train when there is such an obviously difference between the fore- and background.

5 out of 10 for effort

Anemic Disney...

Residents of a French village attempt to stop an American from using monkeys in place of human workers on his newly-acquired olive farm. Poor screenplay from G.K. Wilkinson's book "The Monkeys" actually wants us to sympathize with the land-owner, who should perhaps be forced to do his own olive picking! Forgettable Disney product with the expected slapstick interludes is well-made, if not fresh. OK performances by Dean Jones, Yvette Mimieux and wily Maurice Chevalier (in his final film), but the argument at the center of the story isn't expanded upon, and the romance which sketchily develops between Dean and Yvette seems like an afterthought as well. Obviously, this was aimed at a younger crowd, but why not give kids something to think about as well as to laugh at? *1/2 from ****

Great Movie

I saw this movie many years ago and it has remained my favourite comedy to this day, the two main characters of the movie are Eric and Ernie, great British comedians of their day. Eric can make me laugh just by looking at him. This movie is a classic and is well worth watching. Filmed on the Riviera, as the title infers, one funny thing after another befalls the pair, in the spy-like way of James Bond etc. Great fun non stop laughter,
